Green war on lice
11 Jun 2010
Summer camp season is about to begin. It’s going to be a lot of fun for your kids! But sometimes they get infested with lice… According to the CDC, between 6 and 12 million children a year become infected with lice. If your kid(s) got these creepy critters, what do you do next? First, don’t panic: although lice are creepy tiny blood suckers, they do not pose any health threat. Second, don’t rush to the anti-lice hair salon or the specialized anti-lice services which can cost up to a few thousands $ for a family. You can do it yourself, naturally, safely, efficiently and for less than $30. Here is what you need to know about lice and how to get rid of them organically.
Lice 101
So you’ve spotted live lice, which can be tan or grayish white, or nits – tiny white or yellow eggs that stick to the hair like superglue: don’t freak out (check the lice and nits photos from the CDC to make sure it’s lice). Remember that lice are no indication of poor hygiene as they equally infest kids in poor and fancy neighborhoods. Bottom line, everyone goes through this and it doesn’t mean your house, your kid, the school or the camp are not clean. Before running to the drugstore and jump on any anti-lice treatment, be aware that the mainstream anti-lice treatments use toxic pesticides and that pesticides have recently been linked to the epidemics of ADHD (Attention Deficiency Hyperactivity Disorder) in kids. Moreover, more and more lice are resistant to these pesticides, so they’re not only unsafe but also useless. So what’s next?
War on lice goes green and safe!
We have a set of organic anti-lice shampoo and lotion. They are made with essential oils like Lavender, Tea Tree and Citronella which will chase lice away if they’re here and keep them away if they’re not here yet. No harsh treatment, no toxic stuff: just the natural power of essential oils. Lice cannot survive outside a human host for more than 36 hrs so don’t worry about your pets and carpets and rugs. Just wash all the bed linens and clothes and dry them in high heat.
Here is the how-to step by step:
- Wash your kids’ hair (and yours) with the anti-lice shampoo and leave it on for 2-3 min.
- Rinse throroughly
- Apply the anti-lice lotion on the wet hair and leave it on for 20 min. Wrap your kids’ hair in a towel
- Comb your kids’ hair with a fine comb to remove lice and nits
- Rinse throughly
- Repeat 2-3 days later, then once a week for 2 weeks to get rid of all the nits
This is a safe, inexpensive and efficient way to get rid of lice or keep them away from your family if the school or the camp have issued a warning.
Have a beautiful day!
